Book cover titled ‘Do This First’ by Elizabeth Pampaloni features a woman with red hair in a green dress, pondering with her finger on her chin. The subtitle reads ‘Market Daily. Get Results. Lose the Burnout.’

Do This First- Elizabeth Pampalone

In 2020, while the world was baking banana bread and concocting sourdough starters, I did something equally questionable: I created a giant spreadsheet.

Not your average budget tracker or to-do list, this one was full of daily marketing tasks. Tiny ones. Actionable ones. Tasks that actually moved the needle for me over the years. It wasn’t fancy, just functional. And it came from one core belief:

Marketing shouldn't feel like a second full-time job.

At the time, I called it Do This First: Market Daily. Get Results. Lose the Burnout. It was meant for the non-marketers, the business owners just trying to keep their head above water and still show up online. And honestly? It was for marketers too. Because let’s be real: marketers have some of the worst consistency when it comes to their own marketing.

Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets For Designers - Shel Perkins

I had been in business about 3-4 years before I came across this book. It changed the way I viewed my business and how I thought about taking care of myself and my family first, and having a few more boundaries. It offers TONS of practical advice and even some contract examples.

Book titled 'Profit First' by Mike Michalowicz, with a subtitle about transforming business from a cash-eating monster to a money-making machine, revised and expanded edition, featuring crossed-out words such as 'revenue', 'utilities', 'supplies', 'payroll', and 'taxes'.

Profit First - Mike Machalowicz

After 10 years of struggling with my finances, I knew there had to be a better way to own a business than living paycheck to paycheck. Being a self taught entrepreneur, I was never taught the finer points of business accounting etc. (Trust me, the class I took in college was like GREEK to me.) After reading this book cover to cover in almost one sitting, I CHANGED EVERYTHING I WAS DOING! It opened my eyes to a new way to prosper that didn’t require too much from me at one time as far as change or sacrifice. My margins were already razor thin, but I knew I could make the small changes over time that would lead to big results in the future. I did it and I can say as long as I stick to the system (I am human and I do fail sometimes.) I am never in need of anything monetarily. When I lose my way, I see the effects almost immediately. (PS the Audiobook is my favorite, it’s like listening to a podcast.)
